“Yellowstone”, a modern western, stars Kevin Costner and highlights a ranching family on the verge of losing their land to a Native American reservation, urban land developers and a national park.

When Costner was approached by show creator Taylor Sheridan to play John Dutton, owner of the largest ranch in the United States, the 63-year-old jumped at the chance to demonstrate his acting chops in a unique way.

“The appeal of this was the outside,” Costner told Fox News. “[But] it was actually the story that Taylor produced in the script, and that was what I attracted to. I think it’s a good story is always relevant, and that it is time to tell it, you know.”

“This is really the right time to tell ‘Yellowstone,'” he added.

Although the premise of the show seemingly gives political undertones relating to land use and tenure, Sheridan, 48, and Costner made it a point to illustrate that there is a clear link between the current affairs and the historical importance of the understanding of how valuable the land resources in other hands.

“I would not say that it is political, I would say it is socially aware,” the “Sons of Anarchy” star told. “I would say that these problems, you know, ownership of the land, and the use of the land is a problem, because the first pilgrims here, and these problems continue to exist, so that it is relevant for today.”

“There is a real romance to it,” he added. “There is a danger, and is in many ways a microcosm of the problems we’re everywhere, so it was a great way to explore those things.”

Costner added the show needed to be a certain type of person to tackle this conflict head on and come out on the other side.

“I didn’t think about the politics,” the Academy Award winner said. “I think about the beginning of the livestock people. The required land and it requires that people with the personality is strong enough and strong enough to hold these ranches.”

“These farms were built, and there is already someone pulls on them constantly, you know. We took it from someone,” he added.

“Yellowstone” debuts June 20 on the Paramount Network. It is Costner’s first acting effort since he played Larry Bloom, Molly Bloom’s father, in the Academy Award-nominated film “Molly’s Game” in 2017.
