Women develop more eating disorders than men. This would be because women are more hersenacitiviteit in areas that are associated with a negative self-image.
This emerges from research that has been published in the Oxford Journal. By means of virtual reality made researchers the bodies of sixteen men and sixteen women thicker or thinner than they actually were. In between sizes they the brain activity.
When the participants body as a much thicker saw, there was an increase in the area in the hersensen that is linked to emotions. Especially in women was this effect strong.
The researchers suggest that this research may help explain a neurobiological underpinnings of an eating disorder and vulnerability in women.
