WASHINGTON – To cover-up or not to cover up? Melania Trump wore a veil at the Vatican on Wednesday to meet the pope, but not to a previous encounter with the king of Saudi Arabia.
Why the difference? The answer is a mixture of personal preference, diplomatic protocol and religious dictates.
Vatican protocol says that women meeting the pope should wear long-sleeved, formal black garments and a veil to cover their head — rules that are not strictly enforced. Many women see to meet the pope without covering their head. Mrs. Trump is Catholic.
In Saudi Arabia, most Western women have no respect in the way Saudi women and female residents do.
Ms. Trump is also not a Saudi Islamic holy places or mosques, where head coverings have been necessary.
