A West Virginia man was arrested after officials of the state of the Natural Resources of the Police discovered he had the catch of rattlesnakes of a nearby national forest, and holding them in his home in Randolph County.

The investigation was sparked after officials received information about the illegal rattlesnake possession, eventually leading to the man’s home, where she at 17 rattlesnakes, West Virginia Natural Resources Police said in an online statement this week.
The man, who has not yet been identified, was charged with two counts of illegal possession of a timber rattlesnake, and the possession of a rattlesnake less than 42 cm. In West Virginia, the residents have a rattlesnake and it must be at least 42 inches in length, according to the officials.

The rattlers were later returned to the caves, near where they were first captured, the West Virginia Natural Resources Police said.
