nearvideo President Trump talks about possible purchase of Greenland
President Donald Trump has commented on rumors that he and his administration look into the purchase of Greenland, while journalists, outside of the Marine One on Sunday.
It’s called “fill in the blank.”
Real estate speculation in Greenland. Brett Gardner and Aaron Boone crazy and thrown out of every game possible this month for the Yankees. Airport worker slipping travelers advice, to tell them they are “ugly.”
We are deep into the alleged Washington “news void.” It is allegedly forced by the long Congressional recess and presidential vacation in August every year.
The Congress is out of session until 9. September. And so will need to make something happen for the news.
The Capitol Rotunda teams with tourists. But you will not find that the legislature here. A handful of members of a parachute in Washington for business meetings and to do one or two days ‘ work in their DC offices. A few show up for the chair can be shortened to “pro-forma” sessions of the house of representatives and the Senate, which run anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes.
But that’s it. Most of the legislators are back in their districts or States, traveling abroad or just on a normal holiday.
President trump, as always, dominated the news cycle, interrupted only by the shooting in El Paso and Dayton and fight with reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN), as they tried to travel to Israel.
And so, what fills the vacuum? Tripe about octopus selfies gone wrong, and a TV reboot of 90210.
And come September, legislators return to session, the partial regaining of the narrative. In fact, the House Judiciary Committee legislation on the “red flag” laws and the prohibition swing back into action a bit early – on September 5, to be exact – in order to prep the condemned hate crimes, access to weapons.
There is talk about impeachment, and what the next steps will be for house Democrats, as you ramp up your studies.
It is not hard to imagine that the prosecution will call to consume the most news oxygen again soon, even if the testimony of the Special Counsel, Robert Müller staring at us from the rearview mirror.
Pressure-mount-for-house-speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and at each other’s throat, with the President – or perhaps the attenuation of the probes. Pelosi may also need to respond to the impeachment question soon considering that more than half of all house Democrats, now the demand for either impeachment or a “formal” indictment request. Judiciary Committee Democrats to say that they do, an indictment of “investigation.” It is unclear whether the full House would vote to authorize, indeed, a formal charge request, ala Watergate in 1974.
But next to a man on his prostheses, swallowing before the surgery, there are many other things also.
The legislature must figure out how to Fund the government until September 30. You expect the house and Senate to knock out a couple of individual spending bills in September – reveals, perhaps, defense, energy & water, programs, and appropriations for the departments of labor and health and Human Services. Then, expect that some kind of interim spending measure to avoid a partial shutdown on 1. October. Note that the spending caps/ “debt brake” package that Congress recently passed which contains no money. The law represents only the expenditure for the next two years. This makes it easier to avoid the shutdown. But the work ahead remains.
This month, the rotary spur could work in a flood of hearings (especially in the house) on background checks, “assault weapons” and white supremacy. It is a lot of talk. The White house has in cooperation with some of the cross-party legislators to whether there is a way to muscle through the Senate a response to the shootings. But in this letter, it is unclear whether Congress has the political will to fight against all that with firearms, and additional factors.
In the background the negotiations on a new trade, wait for a Pact between the U.S., Mexico and Canada, called the USMCA. A working group of the Democrats appointed by Pelosi worked behind the scenes with the US trade representative Robert Lighthizer. The team of house Democrats trying to establish in order to secure changes in the USMCA, it is subject to ratification sometime this fall. The Trump Administration hoped to advance the package in this summer. But the plan was simply not ready. That is why House Democrats try, the contour of the consistency according to your taste, when it comes to enforcement, pharmaceuticals, and intellectual property.
It is by no means certain that the legislature will actually address immigration/migration and support of prisoners at the border. The issue remains on the radar to find without the political will on Capitol Hill, a solution. A failure to wrestle with the causes of the problems could very well the power of the legislature to again cough account of expenditure of an emergency to address humanitarian issues at the border.
Then there are elections. The legislators will return to Washington, to see if it coats more Republican pension and if these seats are the chances for Democratic pickups. The Democratic presidential field can also begin to thin-out. September. Second-and third-tier presidential hopefuls may start to fall out.
But the presidential field, it’s not just about who’s in or out of the race. It’s about how the Democratic members of Congress can begin to support or jump on the behind of the various candidates running. In addition, the legislator will comment more and more, or respond to, political positions or statements by those in the White house. In other words, Congress is juggling political issues such as the financing of the government or of the USMCA can. But love drives the presidential sweepstakes, 15 months away from the November election in 2020.
And what could the news cycle to dominate for the Rest of the month? The same thing, the forms of narrative, while the other 11 months of the year: President: Trump’s Twitter feed. Who he decides to take the challenge of a morning. Which city attracts his wrath. Who is Mr. Trump can decide to forgive. In which country a new slate threatening to the rates.
