Vitesse-trainer Fraser feels responsibility in Europe

Vitesse-trainer Henk Fraser is aware that his club this season in the Europa League can play an important role for the Dutch football now PSV, Ajax and FC Utrecht already in the preliminary rounds are off.

“We have the responsibility to tackle and lessons to learn,” says Fraser Friday at Omroep Gelderland. “We all want that Dutch football is better, so there is a certain responsibility on us.”

PSV ran aground early this month in the third qualifying round of the Europa League against NK Osijek from Croatia, while Ajax (against Rosenborg) and FC Utrecht (against Zenit St. Petersburg) on Thursday in the play-offs from flew.

“We have a lot to learn from surrounding countries, because it is becoming increasingly difficult for clubs from other countries to beat”, says Fraser. “It is for us a matter of those matches to learn and to perform.”

The trainer of cup winner saw Friday afternoon, three “beautiful teams” from the sleeve rolls when the draw in Monaco. Vitesse will be in the group stage of the Europa League against the Italian Lazio, the French OGC Nice and the Belgian Zulte Waregem.

“We get great teams with old friends. In Lazio, for example, plays Stefan the Free, with Nice special players like Mario Champions and Wesley Sneijder, and at Zulte Waregem we come Timothy Derijck against,” says Fraser.

“Probably think all clubs that they are against us the points to address, so we have to prove that they bear with us.”


Defender Alexander Büttner is hoping to sneak on wintering. “That would have been clever. But it is not impossible. I have full confidence in our team.”

Vitesse start the European adventure is on the 14th of september with a home match against Lazio, two weeks later, an away game at OGC Nice.

Vitesse will receive Zulte Waregem on 19 October and 2 november on a visit to the club from Belgium. Then on november 23, an away game against Lazio, before Nice, on 7 december, is a guest at the Gelredome. The best two teams qualify for the knock-out stages.
