Two Virginia Tech students were shot at a campsite, in a parking lot of a decade ago is not forgotten, as the researchers are hoping to renew interest in the case by upping the reward.

The Virginia State Police and the FBI last week announced a $100,000 reward for information in connection with the murder of 18-year-old Heidi Childs and her 19-year-old boyfriend, David Metzler, at the Caldwell Fields parking area on the Jefferson National Forest in Montgomery County on Aug. 26, 2009.


While law enforcement is hoping to take advantage of the latest advances in DNA testing and criminal justice databases in order to find the killer, they said that it would not be enough.

“We have new leads, still, that we are pursuing,” said Lt-Col Tim Lyons, executive Director of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation. “But we still need the public to help with the fit of the pieces and parts together in order to bring to justice, to Heidi and David and their families.”

The most devout of Christians, Childs and Metzler, for the first time, met in high school through their church, a youth group, but didn’t start dating until they are at Virginia Tech, according to a new website for the police department be created to garner interest in the matter.

Childs and Metzler were in their second year of studies in Bio-Chemistry, and Industrial and Systems Engineering, respectively. But, Childs had a passion for medicine, which has led to a desire to change her major to pre-med. Before a child can talk to is her advisor, and she was killed.

The couple was shot to death at 8:25 a.m. and 10 p.m. that night in the parking lot, police said.

While the researchers said that they have an interest in the pursuit of “certain persons” in connection with the case, it is the name of a suspect.


“It’s been 10 years,” Lyon said. “It is time for you to step forward and let the families find a sense of peace. Heidi’s parents, and brethren, and sisters, by the name of David’s parents, and brethren, and sisters, and their friends have all been held to ransom long enough.”
