Virginia man sentenced for lying in trying to take part in military

NORFOLK, Va. Virginia a man who told an FBI undercover employee he wanted to commit jihad was sentenced to five years in prison for passport fraud and making false statements in his application to join the U.S. military.

A U. S. attorney’s office press release says 28-year-old Shivam Patel, of Williamsburg, such as sentenced Monday.

The associated press reports that Patel, who was raised Hindu before converting to Islam, he left his job as a teacher of English in China to fly to Jordan, where he spoke about the membership of the Islamic State. Prosecutors say Jordan moved to deport him. He was met by the FBI informant, who said Patel admiration for an army officer who killed 13 soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas. Patel not to disclose his overseas trips in his application.
