“Previously, we had allowed a certain degree of flexibility in the minimum age for travel, but also more and more of our guests have told us how much they appreciate an environment where they can travel without children.”

People who want to take family fun to the high seas can no longer look to Viking River Cruises, as the line quietly announced that persons under the age of 18 years will not be allowed on board for future trips.

On August 27, Orlando Weekly reported that the Basel, Switzerland-based Viking Cruises adjusted their river cruise policy to mirror that of their Viking Ocean Cruises line, which had an adults-only policy since the debut in 2015. The cruise line of the new streamlined age policy is now “one of the strictest in the industry”, says the outlet.

“In addition to marketing what Viking is, we believe that our guests also appreciate to know what Viking is not.”

According to the Viking ‘ s new general terms and conditions page for all cruises booked on both lines after 1 August 2018, passengers must the age of 18 at the beginning of their scheduled trip. Cruises booked on behalf of those under the age of 18 up to and including 2019, ahead of the August 1 update, are still welcome for the planned cruise.

As noted by Travel Weekly, Viking River Cruises’ minimum passenger age is 12 years old, before the new decision. The cruise line’s Senior Vice President of Marketing, Richard Marnell, told the outlet that the roll-out is logical, as Viking’s travel experience is aimed at the over 50s.

In the industry, Viking is not only with the new no-kids-allowed rule.
