A GHB addiction is very difficult to treat, similar to a heroin addiction. That is because users the negative effects of late come to understand.
This is evident from research by the ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), writes the Volkskrant. GHB gives no hangover, and the problems begin really at the time that withdrawal symptoms occur.
“Addicts find their lives with GHB are difficult, but a life without GHB, they find unbearable,” says Harmen Beurmanjer of the Radboud University, who carried out the research.
Tens of thousands of Dutch people use on a yearly basis even GHB. A small part of it is addicted. More than half of the drug addicts falls within three months after kicking the habit back.
“GHB is one of the most dangerous substances we know of, if it’s about addiction and dependency”, says Tibor Brunt of the Trimbos Institute. “The withdrawal symptoms are quite serious.” If users stop using GHB, they get under more severe anxiety attacks and heart problems.
One in five drug-related incidents in ambulances play GHB a role. “Almost 45 percent of the GHB-addicts is ever in a state of coma brought to the Emergency room,” said Beurmanjer. “And 20 percent of them once or several times in a coma in the intensive care unit here.”
