BRUSSELS – The United States urges Russia to prove that the honor of a landmark nuclear arms treaty with the Soviet era or to prepare for the pact to collapse.
Russia insists that it is in honor of the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. But NATO fears that the 9M729 ground-fired cruise missile system Russia is developing would allow for the launch of a nuclear weapon in Europe with little or no notice.
The US ambassador to NATO, Kay Bailey Hutchison, said Tuesday that “if Russia is not in compliance, they will be confronted with the consequences of not having a treaty.”
Hutchison warned of “a time frame” after that of the U.S. “will not be able to Russia to have the opportunities that we have agreed that neither of us would have without getting a terrible chance.”
