Trump had contemplated the plan for some time, according to the State Department and the Pentagon signed earlier this year. President Barack Obama is also sending deadly weapons to the Ukraine.

The State Department, responsible for foreign military sales, would not confirm that anti-tank missiles or other deadly weapons would be sent. But in a statement late on Friday, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the US had decided “to defend improved defensive capabilities” to assist Ukraine in building up its military in the long term, its sovereignty, and the “deterrence of further aggression.”

“U.S. aid is entirely defensive in nature, and as we have always said that Ukraine is a sovereign state and has said the right to defend themselves,” Nauert.

Although the portable Javelin anti-tank missiles can kill that advocates for the granting of the Ukraine have long argued, they are considered to be “defensive”, because the Ukrainians would use to defend their territory and deter the attack, the Russians foreign country, or to take new territory.

According to the law, the State Department must tell Congress of a planned foreign military sales, triggering a review period in which the legislature can act on, to stop the sale. It was unclear whether the administration had officially given to Congress, but lawmakers are unlikely to try to block him, that the Democrats and Republicans alike have long urged the government to continue the step.
