U.S. mayors join push for ‘Global Green New Deal”, at the international conference

The mayor of New York City, Los Angeles and many other cities of the USA joined their colleagues from around the world on Wednesday in pushing for a global version of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a “Green New Deal.”

The freshman New York Congressman traveled to Copenhagen for a meeting with the C40, a group of 80 led-the mayor of Los Angeles’ mayor Eric Garcetti. The plan aims at halving carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 by clean alternatives, and the “strictest possible regulations.” To reach it, the Parisian climate is trying to keep the agreements for the objective of warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

In addition to Garcetti, the mayor of at least five U.S. cities, statements to support the global adoption Ocasio-Cortez climate framework released. The New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio; Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan; Austin, Texas, Mayor Steve Adler; Portland, Ore., Mayor Ted Wheeler; and Philadelphia mayor, Jim Kenney.

“I’m inspired by this coalition and the commitments made for a global Green New Deal. If we work to join forces in the world, we can defeat our greatest threat and recognize our greatest Chance,” said Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY

The C40 group, echoed months Ocasio-Cortez represented the rhetoric of the warning of a looming “climate emergency” and blamed “a minority of powerful, science-denying governments, the interests of the fossil fuel industry” for inaction.

Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, who also serves as the C40 board President, described the commitment as a way to improve public health and promote economic growth.

“Together, C40 cities arrested thousands of successful measures to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and demonstrate how climate protection to economic growth and improve public health. There is no time to lose,” he said.

Wednesday the message appeared to be a blatant rebuke of the Trump administration’s approach to foreign policy on climate change. The President controversially said he was from the U.S. support for the Paris climate agreement, citing the economic impact on cities like Pittsburgh.

It is also the last indication that high-ranking officials were ready to embrace, Ocasio-Cortez in the ambitious vision for tackling climate change. A whole series of 2020, the Democratic candidate, endorsed the framework of its “Green New Deal” during the installation of multi-trillion-dollar plans involved, that the essential control.

The conservatives protested the plan as a thinly veiled attempt at socialism in the United States. The price alone could be problematic for the Democrats in the election of 2020. Supporters say the alternative would be worse. “We will have to start getting comfortable with how extreme the problem is,” Ocasio-Cortez before, “because only until we accept it … how bad climate change is and how bad can it be, for the lives of our children, we are convenient to keep track of really great solutions.”
