(Reuters) – Twitter Inc’s (TWTR.N) said on Thursday it would be to identify and to deemphasize the tweets that broke the rules, but that came from the major sources, such as politicians, in order to strike a balance between freedom of speech and expression, and accountability.
The new feature comes as Twitter has been under scrutiny over the political prejudices of the tweets that will be displayed in the feed.
The US President, Donald Trump, an avid Twitter user, with over 61 million followers, and other conservatives have repeatedly accused technology companies of being biased against them and in favour of the liberals.
Twitter on Thursday said that the new rules would apply to politicians and government officials, with more than 100,000 followers.
“Yes, there are some cases where it is in the interests of the public to have access to some Tweets, even if they would otherwise be in violation of our rules,” Twitter said in a blog post.
In the past, Twitter had been allowed to make such tweets have to continue to be on the run when they are in the public interest, according to the company.
Now, it added, “We have put a notice a display, you must click or tap on it before the Tweet, additional context and clarity.”
The notice will appear in the home timeline, and in other areas as well, such as, search, Twitter also said.
