Twents auction house sells paintings of Hitler and Himmler still not
The Twents Veilinghuis see off of the sale of a painting of Adolf Hitler and two paintings of SS-leader Heinrich Himmler. On the proposed auction was fuss.
The Centre for Information and Documentation on Israel (ORGANIZATION) spoke of shame, and called the auction “distasteful and shocking”.
The portraits were made by SS Wolfgang Willrich. The auction house emphasized that it never intended “to hurt anyone”, but states that it is here, however, comes to art.
“The Egyptians, the Romans, the crusades, slavery, Napoleon, Stalin”, says a spokesman. “Are all examples of our history where terrible things have happened, but in the heritage of mankind to hear.”
Out of respect for people “who take offence to” it was decided that the pieces still not under the hammer to let go.
The Twents Veilinghuis says approached by museums that are interested in the paintings.
