Fighters of the Free Syrian Army with the support of the Turkish army, the centre of the Syrian town of Al-Bab captured from Islamic State (IS), reports the Turkish state news agency Anadolu Thursday. This would make the northern city are fully occupied.

The conquest of Al-Bab is part of an offensive that in August last year began. The aim IS to expel from the border area between Turkey and Syria to prevent Kurdish militias foot to get off the ground in that area. The strategically located Al-Bab is already several weeks under siege.

Three rebel groups that fight are concerned confirm this IS from the Al-Bab is driven out. “We are pleased to announce that Al-Bab is fully liberated, and that we are now working on its mines to clean up in the residential areas,” said a spokesman of one of those groups.

Wednesday ran the spokesperson of Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan ahead of the conquest of Al-Bab. That is an important step on the road to ‘capital’ Raqqa, according to Ibrahim Kalin. Furthermore, it would, according to Kalin prove that there is an alternative for the Kurdish militia YPG in the fight against IS.
