Turkish Amnesty-director arrested

Idil Eser, the director of Amnesty International in Turkey, it is Wednesday morning arrested together with seven other Turkish human rights defenders and two international trainers. They took part in a training session of a Dutch development agency.

Project officer Wieke Meilink of the Humanistic Institute for development Cooperation (Hivos) reported Thursday morning early that the organisation is still no contact has been able to establish with the arrested activists and employees.

‘Grotesque abuse of power’

Amnesty International calls for the arrest of Esa and the other human rights defenders in a statement “grotesque abuse of power” and calls for their immediate release.

The former director of Amnesty Turkey, Taner Kilic was the beginning of June also arrested. He is accused for “membership of a terrorist organisation’. According to the Turkish prosecutor he has ties with the Gülenbeweging, which by Ankara is seen as the organizer of the couppoging of last year.
