Trump’s abandonment of the ‘war games’ in Korea could weaken the defense

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump ‘ s decision to suspend the large AMERICAN military exercises of South Korea could weaken the alliance’s defense, depending on the length and extent of interruption.

But the potential damage seems to be even greater in the diplomatic arena, given Trump not to consult the allies in advance.

Analysts with experience in u.s.-Asia policy were shaken by Trump’s characterization of the military exercises as provocations and “war games.” These terms are the North-Koreans have been used for years to argue that the U.S. is a hostile nation and to justify the development of nuclear missiles and long-range missiles.

The Pentagon has still not explained to the public that specific military exercises will be postponed or cancelled.
