President Trump on Monday said that the US is trying regime change in Iran and told reporters at the G7 summit in Biarritz, France, that he hopes to see a strong Iran.
Trump’s comments came after a day of tense meetings with his European colleagues about how they approach the best, Iran and the recent tensions in the region. On Sunday, Iran’s foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif made a surprise visit to the summit at the behest of the French President, Emmanuel Macron. Trump said that he knew about Zarif’s appearance, but not meeting with him.
“I knew he was coming, and I respected the fact that he is coming. And we are looking to Iran to Empire, let them be rich, let them also do, if you want to,” Trump said, according to Reuters. “Or you can be bad as can be. And I’ll tell you what, I do not believe that it is acceptable the way you are forced to live in Iran,”

Trump has said in the past that the U.S. is interested in a regime in Tehran will change. He said Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that the United States “seeks no nuclear weapons.”
