An early Donald Trump supporters reap was the nomination of a political windfall from the president-elect’s decisions – who are willing to help clear his way to the South Carolina governor’s mansion.
South Carolina Lieutenant Gov. Henry McMaster threw his support behind Trump again in January 2016, and trump was a sure thing, in the primaries. For months, McMaster has also floated one of the eight names as potential GOP candidates for Governor in 2018.
But trump, in November, Gov. Nikki Haley nominated for U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. If you have confirmed that McMaster would automatically rise to the lieutenancy.
It is better for McMaster. The Haley ‘ s exit probably him incumbent edge in the 2018 election, but another trump card – nominations -which could of South Carolina Rep. Mick Mulvaney – a key competitor in this race from the field.
Mulvaney, a conservative Republican, had with country-wide name recognition, was considered a top contender for Governor, along with McMaster. Trump, nominee, however, him for the White house budget Director.
South Carolina radio host Josh Kimbrell thinks the impact on the McMaster is not a coincidence.
“Governor Nikki Haley’s nomination … was probably the result of the Lieutenant Governor Henry McMaster with a desire to be Governor,” said Kimbrell, also a Republican strategist. “McMaster’s early endorsement of Donald Trump in the first-in-the-South GOP primary, put him in the rare position to ask the President-elect for a favor.”
Trump won the primary.
McMaster’s office and the Trump transition team did not return a request for comment.
Haley was nominated, despite a history of friction with the president-elect. The Governor approved the Florida sen. Marco Rubio in the Republican primary, and famously sparred with Trump via Twitter, after the former presidential candidate, you blasted on social media.
But Haley was one of the first possible Cabinet picks trump and his transition team are interviewed after the election.
Kimbrell speculated that McMaster, with his support of the “Trump” was in the situation, the fulfillment of his political hopes, while at the same time, Governor Haley.”
“It is a rare win-win in South Carolina politics,” he said.
