Trump moved development aid in Central America, in the midst of caravans and flood of refugees

Several US presidents have concluded, parts of the southern border in times of national crisis; presidential historian Doug Wead explains.

Making good on a longstanding threat, and President of the Trump moved this weekend to cut direct aid to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, whose citizens are fleeing from the North, and overwhelming US resources-including as part of the organized caravans, which warned the White house, finally, it can lead to the closure of the entire southern border with Mexico.

The dramatic move comes just days after the Mexican interior Minister Olga Sanchez Cordero warned, ominously, that “the mother of all caravans” could be coming soon from the three Nations

“We have information that a new caravan in Honduras that you are calling ‘the mother of all caravans”, and you think it could be more than 20,000 people,” Cordero Sanchez, said on Wednesday. A much smaller group of about 40 migrants left over the weekend, and a separate caravan of almost 2500 currently makes its way through Mexico.

And the former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson confirmed on Saturday that America has a “crisis” on the southern border, and that the number of apprehensions exceed everything that he encountered during his time serving under former President Barack Obama.

Last December, the U.S. promised more than $10B in aid to Central America and Mexico, to help migrants. Later this month, Trump tweeted: “..Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador to do nothing for the United States, but our money. Word is that a new caravan in Honduras and you do nothing about it. We all aid cut off to these 3 countries — taking advantage of US for years!”

On Saturday, the State Department add the words into action, and informed the Congress that it would look like, to suspend the 2017 and 2018 payments made to the trio of Nations, the home of some of the migrants, the caravan, marched through Mexico to the US border.

In tweets Saturday, Trump also posted to blame Democrats, and Mexico for problems at the border and beyond, namely progressives are only with the amendment to the domestic demography, to be sure, more liberal voters.

“It would be to fix our weak and stupid Democrat inspired immigration laws,” Trump tweeted Saturday. “In less than an hour, and then a vote, that would solve the problem. But the Dems don’t care about the crime, you do not want any victory for trump and the Republicans, even if good for the USA!’

To the extent that Mexico’s role, he tweeted: “Mexico needs to stop its very strong immigration laws, the many thousands of people trying in the United States. Our detention areas to be exhausted and we will no longer be illegals. The next step is to close the border! This will also help us with the drug flow from Mexico to settle!”

The move comes as trump, newly confirmed, after the conclusion of the Special Counsel, Robert Müller Russia is agreement sample, promised to secure the borders and stop incoming caravan during a fiery rally, earlier in the week.

When a Reporter Trump asked on Friday, which could lead to the closure of the border, he said: “it could mean all trade” with Mexico, and added, “We are closing it for a long time.”

Trump has been promising for more than two years to build to stop a long, impenetrable wall along the border, the illegal immigration, although Congress has been reluctant to have the money he needs. In the meantime, he has several times threatened, in the vicinity of the border, but this time with a new group of migrants in the direction of the North, he gave a definite time plan and suggested a visit to the border within the next two weeks.

A major closure could have a particularly severe impact on cross-border municipalities of San Diego, South Texas, as well as supermarkets that sell Mexican produce, the factories that rely on imported parts, and other companies in the United States.

The United States and Mexico trade over $1.7 billion in goods every day, according to the U.S. chamber of Commerce, said the closure of the border would be “a pure economic debacle”, which would be endangered, 5 million American jobs.

New Jersey Democrat sen. Bob Menendez, the ranking member of the Senate foreign relations Committee, spoke out on Saturday against the cut off for Central America, explains that “foreign assistance is not charity; it advances our strategic interests and capital initiatives, the protection of American citizens.”

And a group of house Democrats in El Salvador, the government condemned the decision, the development assistance to the region.

“We visit El Salvador-assessment of the importance of U.S. aid to Central America and the causes of family and child migration, we are very disappointed that President Trump wants to cut off aid to the region,” the statement said five lawmakers, including Rep. Eliot L. Engel of New York, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. “The President’s approach is totally counterproductive.”

The Trump-government threatened, before you drive back or cut off U.S. aid to Central America. Congress, not the majority of these proposed reductions has been approved, however, and a report this year by the Congressional Research Service, said that any change in the financing would depend on what the Congress does.

In short, a widespread border shutdown, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said, the United States, perhaps in the vicinity of designated ports of entry in the re-personnel to help process the parents and children. A lot of people who cross the border and applied for asylum illegal under US law does not require asylum applicants enter at an official crossing. Most of the people that asylum applications will ultimately be rejected because the asylum applicants do not have to show a concrete and credible fear of persecution-it is not enough to say merely that the conditions are back home economically terrible.

The border officials are also reported to be planning to more than quadruple, the number of asylum seekers sent back to wait on the border, their immigration cases, from 60 to almost 250.

President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Friday his country will do its part to combat the trafficking of human beings. Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico’s foreign relations Secretary, tweeted that his country “not to act is based on threats” and is “the best neighbor”, the US could have.

Alejandra Mier y Teran, executive director of the Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce in San Diego, said that the mere threat of the closure of border crossings sends the wrong message to companies in Mexico, and, finally, chains of companies scare in turning to Asia for their delivery.

“I think the effect would be absolutely devastating on so many fronts,” said Mier y Teran, whose members rely on Otay Mesa to bring the crossroads, television equipment, medical equipment and a wide range of products in the United States, “In relation to a long-term effect, it’s basically, you shoot yourself in your foot. It sends a message to other countries that “do not come, because at our borders may not work at any time’. This is extremely scary and dangerous.”
