Kurtz: Bob Woodward permeates every management
‘MediaBuzz’ host Howard Kurtz weighs in on claims that Bob Woodward is a ‘operating and to hurt President Trump in his new book, ‘fear.’
President Trump and his White house allies to climb, say, a counter-attack on the Bob Woodward book, but let’s just, he’s not Omarosa.
As a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist and writes books about the President since Richard Nixon, he can not be simply dismissed as a third-rate hack, or to grind someone with an axe. Woodward has hundreds of hours of tape interviews with the White house and other sources for “fear”, along with internal documents
But the President still tries, says the Daily Caller: “It’s just another bad book. He had a lot of credibility problems.” Yesterday, he told reporters: “the book means nothing, it is a work of fiction … He had the same problem with other presidents.”
Senior officials have thrown, refusals of the disparaging comments attributed to them. And Trump tweeted:
“The Woodward book has already been refuted and discredited by General [Minister of defense] James Mattis and General [chief of staff] John Kelly,” he wrote on Twitter. “Your quotes were from a Scam, a con on the public. This also applies to other stories and quotes. Woodward is a operating? You note the timing?”
Sorry, the dismissal of Bob Woodward as a possible democratic operative simply do not wash. He has a very tough book on the Clinton White house and a revealing look at the Obama-White-House-the settlement of military conflicts.
Another tweet – “don’t know why Washington is to change the politicians, defamation laws?” — reflects the president’s larger frustration with the press. Under Supreme Court precedent, a public figure must prove that a journalist is not only wrong, but that he acted with malice and reckless disregard for, whether true or not. How, exactly, the President would change that?
Woodward is not perfect. His books are always controversial. There has long been criticism that people who work with him are shown, more compassionate than people who don’t (but that’s a topic for all journalists). And some of his anecdotes are often denied.
Namely: you have describes John Kelly, the President as “off the rails” and ” the chair “crazy town,” to deny, some of the quotes attributed to him. You have Jim Mattis, described as the say that the President operates at the fifth or sixth grade, calls the book “fiction.” You have to deny attorney John Dowd, that he told Trump he could either reject, contact Bob Mueller, or face living in an “orange jumpsuit.” These are strong statements.
But I have not seen Woodward in the vicinity, and he can invent things. Sources can be wrong informed him, and possibly faulty memories or agendas. But he did not write fiction.
“It’s just another bad book. He had a lot of credibility problems,” Trump, the Daily Caller said.
And to deny that he called Jeff Sessions “mentally retarded” or “stupid southerners” Trump said Woodward: “He made this to share!”
But Trump tweeted five years ago, “Only the Obama WH with attacking Bob Woodward.”
And on the fascinating audio-the Trump – August-call to Woodward that no one had him, the reporter told several requests for an interview, the President said: “I’d like to speak to. You know, I am very open to you. I think she was always fair.” But as soon as the extracts hitting the fan, not so much.
By the way, I went through something similar with my book “media madness: Donald Trump, the press, and The war for the truth.” I asked several high-level people for a presidential interview, nothing happens, and two weeks rolled up in front of the presses, I got a call an expression of surprise that I went ahead, without more time, arrange an interview after which nothing happened.
My book, in addition to media hostility, shown in the top staff and consultants often try to rein in, the President of what you have seen, how wrong-headed decisions, or pruning his personal attacks or clean up the mess, after he has sent, impulsive tweets. Such internal fights have also been reported in countless articles. So is it really surprising that this describes what is Woodward, as they break “in the Executive is a” nerve together is an important theme of his book?
What is also noteworthy is that Woodward is not a trump card-basher. In contrast to his former partner, Carl Bernstein – who is a “malicious presidency has been attacked,” and said the “fear” statements, Trump’s office is a “national emergency” Woodward has said, some of the coverage is unfair to the President. He appeared regularly on the Fox as well as the other networks.
Here is an excerpt overlooked, was to a large extent. Woodward reported that Kelly said in a meeting: “I’m the only thing protecting the President from the press. The press is on him. You want to destroy him. And I will definitely stand in the way, the balls and the arrows.”
The book paints an ugly picture of a chaotic White house, but also the media largely antagonistic role is also part of the portraits.
