HONOLULU – President Donald Trump has approved federal disaster aid for residents whose homes were destroyed or damaged as a result of the Kilauea volcano eruption in Hawaii.
Gov. David Ige says Trump approved the request for individual assistance on Thursday.
Ige says eligible clients can get help from the federal government for matters such as housing, unemployment, trauma and legal affairs.
Hundreds of houses have been destroyed since May 3, when Kilauea erupted and opened cracks that oozed lava in a predominantly rural area of the Big Island.
Hawaii’s congressional delegation urged Trump to act quickly on Ige-request.
They watch the eruption contains fountains of lava shoot a couple of hundred metres high, ash and toxic gases into the air and lava covering roads, electricity, and neighborhoods.
