The Trump administration announced on Monday it is cut allows for the maximum number of refugees in the country in the next year to 30,000, citing national security concerns and the need to restore the integrity of the system.

Secretary of state Mike Pompeo, said that the administration is a reduction in the refugee cap of 45,000 in fiscal year 2018 to 30,000 in fiscal year 2019. It has the lowest ceiling, since the refugee program began in 1980.

The former President Barack Obama lifted allows the ceiling to 110,000 in the year 2017, and the United States, nearly 85,000 refugees in 2016-the last full year of the Obama administration. But the Trump administration has decided to take a much tougher line on immigration and refugee entry, which focused on the need to fully vet those in the United States

Pompeo said, even with the cut, the United States remains the most generous nation in the world when it comes to immigration, and stressed that the number should be seen in the broader context of other humanitarian programs.

“Some characterize the refugee ceiling as the sole indicator of the American commitment to vulnerable people around the world,” he said in the speech at the State Department. “This would be wrong.”

Pompeo said there was evidence that the prior review system was “defective” and at least one Islamic state (ISIS) was a member in the country, as well as the other with criminal backgrounds.

He also said that a lower cap reflects the enormous backlog of outstanding cases of 800,000 people in unsolved cases, which must be treated.

“In consideration of both the national security of the United States interest and the urgent need to restore the integrity of our overwhelmed asylum system, the United States, the focus is on addressing the humanitarian protection cases, said already in the country,” he is.

The move represents the latest step in the direction of a often-mentioned goal, to secure the of the trump management of America’s borders and to control strictly, the country. While 30,000 is the maximum number that of the U.S. in fiscal year 2019, the actual number could be far less. So far this year, the United States 20,918 refugees has only allowed.

The administration secured the victory for his refugee and immigration policy this summer, as Trump was the travel ban for people from Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria and Venezuela, confirmed by the Supreme court.

In his remarks Monday, Pompeo said the U.S. is working to support refugees as close to their home as possible, and the prioritization of the methods, with which the refugees can return home, if the conditions allow it.

“We can house, feed and medical care for hundreds of thousands of refugees, their homes and more quickly, than we ever could here in the United States,” he said. “The ultimate goal of the best possible care and safety of these people in need, and our approach is to achieve this lofty goal.”
