Incredible video: Cliff collapses on a popular beach in Greece

At least seven people were injured after part of a cliff overlooking Navagio Beach on Zakynthos island came crashing to the sand.

At least seven people were injured on Thursday after part of a cliff overlooking a beach in Greece came crashing on the sand.

Images of the incident, which took place at Navagio Beach on Zakynthos island, showing the tourists on the flight as the great sheet of rock breaks the rock face.

Officials were initially worried that some of the bathers were buried under the rubble, but no one was missing. However, the government searches conducted out of an abundance of caution.

“So far we have not found the trapped people, but we continue to search,” said an official with the local fire brigade, Reuters reported.

The authorities have no reports of anyone missing, but will conduct searches of the area as a precaution.

In total, seven people suffered non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the rockslide, including a 34-year-old Czech woman who was admitted to the hospital with a spinal injury, the Associated Press reported. Her husband and her two children were also admitted to hospital with light injuries, together with three other swimmers who were treated and released.

Two small boats close to Navagio beach — nicknamed “Shipwreck Beach” after a cargo ship wrecked in 1980 — also capsized as a result of the rockslide.

Navagio Beach, known as Shipwreck Beach, is a popular tourist attraction in the City.

“There was a noise and a small piece of rock fell, then a second, larger, and finally a third large piece of rock that in the fall created of a sea whirlpool that destroyed the boats,” a witness told the BBC.

Officials have closed the area to boats — and that is the only way to access the beach — until further notice.

Zakynthos, the Western Greek island where the incident occurred, has long been a popular destination for travelers, but also for noisy party-goers, leading authorities to crack down on bad behavior after the death of the 22-year-old American tourist Barkari Henderson, who was beaten to death outside of Zakynthos, a bar in July 2017.

The local population should also be critical about the island disorderly tourism industry and sex-fuelled attractions, after incidents such as the death of a 17-year-old English tourist outside a bar in 2008, and the arrest of 21 British and Greek citizens after an oral sex competition on the island, Laganas beach, also in 2008.
