Tornado hits Massachusetts city, officials say

A building suffering damage to its roof after a storm passed through on Saturday in Webster, Mass. Officials say a tornado touched down in the Massachusetts town near the Connecticut border. A tornado thrashed its way through a Massachusetts area, injuring at least one person and causing significant damage, officials said Saturday.

In the wake of the twister that carried by Webster, a small town near the Connecticut border, fire and rescue officials posted on Facebook that there are downed trees and power lines, and people without electricity.

The tornado was confirmed by the National Weather Service of Boston on Twitter. In a follow-up post, the agency said the twister had estimated maximum wind speeds of 100-110 km / h.

“Three buildings have been condemned due to severe wind damage,” Webster Fire/Rescue wrote on Facebook. “Of that, two of the buildings are currently being demolished as a result of the damage, causing them is insufficient.”

About two dozen people had to leave their homes as a result of damage, the officials said.

A person suffered injuries after “an part of a roof fell on top of a car,” officials said in the post. The woman was driving in town when the tornado struck and was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, Webster said the police, according to The Associated Press.
