As a father and a son are dead, and the mother of the child has been seriously injured after they were struck by an SUV driven by a man suspected of driving under the influence (DUI), on the night of Halloween in Southern California, police department, told Fox News on Sunday.

As the crash unfolded just before 10 a.m. in Long Beach, according to a news release.

The police said that the suspected DUI driver, identified as 20-year-old Carlo Sample from Long Beach, came with the family on Thursday evening. Paramedics rushed all three of the family members to go to the hospital in critical condition. The 30-year-old father died in hospital that night, and his 3-year-old son died in the hospital on a Saturday morning, Long Beach police said, adding that the mother of the child was critical.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the male driver of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia was driving in a southbound direction, when he’s not out to make a bend in the road, drove on the sidewalk and struck a family of three from Long Beach who were walking on the sidewalk, according to a press release.

Navarro was arrested at the scene and a DUI investigation was launched, which included the area of toxicology, and the police said, adding that he was booked for driving under the influence and gross vehicle manslaughter.

Navarro was released after posting bail, according to online court records. It was not clear whether he had an attorney.

The family has been identified as 30-year-old Joseph Awaida, his son Omar and his wife Raihan Dakhil, who is suffering from a serious, life-threatening injuries,” according to a GoFundMe page that was created in order to cover the family’s medical and funeral expenses.
