Sun Ra – Space Is The Place (1973)

Experimental jazz, with alien references. After a visionary experience claimed the legendary composer Sun Ra, an alien from Saturn to peacekeeping missions. Also, he was the musical founder of the afro-futurism, a style of old African culture blended with futuristic visuals and Egyptian outfits . In the eponymous science fiction film from 1974 recovers time traveler Ra the faith in humanity, thanks to the power of music.

Tangerine Dream – Alpha Centauri (1971)

The electronic pioneers Tangerine Dream have been brought to a close by the Krautrock, the genre around 1970, a current groundbreaking German bands defined. The often instrumental music was a mix between traditional and electronic instruments. For guitarist Edgar Froese was Alpha Centauri, the first appointment of ‘Kosmische Musik’: long songs with atmospheric, wide-spreading klankpaletten. Devo – Space Junk (1978)

A year before the American space station Skylab crashed in Western Australia, brought the American new wave band Devo on their debut album. Coincidence or not: one of the highlights is Space Junk, a story about Sally, the girl that unfortunate hit by space debris.

David Bowie – Starman (1972)

David Bowie’s iconic character Ziggy Stardust is an alien rock star that the earth wants to survive as a messenger for extraterrestrial beings. On the hit single from Bowie’s album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, he brings over the radio a message of hope to the youth, namely the salvation of the alien Starman. ‘There’s a starman waiting in the sky / He’d like to come and meet us / But he thinks he d blow our minds.’

MGMT – We Care (2004)

Lou Reed – Satellite Of Love(1973)

The Velvet Underground had a hit, so, Reed wrote a song about the launch of a satellite, which in 1970, eagerly picked up by the news. During the recording of the album, Loaded was the song no further than a demo version, but if soloartiest ended up Satellite of Love on the classic Transformer. In addition to an ode to the launch feel of the song as an indictment of the rise of technology, despite the show value that that entails.

Belle & Sebastian – A Space Boy Dream (1998)

A lucid dream or a firm trip? On A Space Boy Dream goes Belle & Sebastian on a trip to Mars. Not just a trip, dad and sister were going along, in case there are martians, their path would cross. An ode to the spaceman? What we do know for sure is that the mysterious parlando of Stuart David complements the psychedelic, jazzy indulgence.

Modest Mouse – Space Travel Is Boring (1996)

“Man shot to the moon / I bought a paperback and want to go real soon / I’m shot to the moon / been there a half an hour, I want to come home soon’.Modest Mouse are already not the happiest at home, but if Space Travel Is Boring is about the space or about a disappointing drugervaring for interpretation.
