The U.S. Army, the Romanian troops to take part in live-fire exercises

SMARDAN TRAINING, Romania – Hundreds of U.S. Army and Romanian troops have joined forces for a live-fire exhibition of tanks and planes perform battlefield maneuvers in Operation Atlantic Resolve, an exercise intended to remove the worries in Eastern Europe in an increasingly bellicose Russia.

Maj. Gen. John L. Gronsky, the deputy commanding general for the National Guard, on Thursday called the drill, which took place in a snowstorm “a demonstration of the willingness of Romania and the United States to fight shoulder to shoulder to defend our freedom if necessary.”

He said that the US presence in the region is “all about the quenching of our opponents… on the build of our willingness to improve our readiness… on the evidence of our freedom of movement in Europe.”

Gen. Nicolae Ciuca, Romanian chief of Staff, said similar drills will run until the end of the year.
