‘The Trend for migrants to connect must be turned
The European trend to asylum seekers and migrants must be tackled, says mensenrechtencommissaris Nils Muiznieks of the Council of Europe Tuesday.
Detention is, according to Muiznieks, a far-reaching infringement on the right to freedom of migrants. He points out that experts confirm that the harmful effects on the mental health of migrants. Children especially experienced detention often as “shocking, and even traumatic’.
The mensenrechtencommissaris argues that European countries, migrants often close to them, or for them to come off. That happens, according to him, among others, in Greece after the EU-Turkey deal.
Muznieks argues for alternatives, such as supervision, lighter restriction of movement, or a notification. He says that during his visits to EU countries, including the Netherlands, have urged.
