Coach Peter Bosz has performed this season what no one thought possible. He led Ajax to the final of the Europa League, which his team Wednesday night against Manchester United. This is how the success came about.
The final whistle of Olympique Lyon-Ajax has riveted and on the sidelines know Peter Bosz but difficult board with his attitude. He must be well exuberant cheer or something more subdued, such as a 3-1 defeat that may be required.
But it is a defeat with a golden edge, because for the first time in 21 years is Ajax again in a European final. Although the Europa League, the stiefbroertje of the Champions League, but it makes the performance no less. As an assistant Hendrie Krüzen him around the neck and flies, know Bosz enough. This milestone should be celebrated.
But it continues to get used to the man from Apeldoorn. Eight days earlier, after the heenwedstrijd against the French, forced his assistant to him on the field after the impressive 4-1 victory, while the 53-year-old trainer always normally fast the catacombs has to offer, regardless of profit or loss. But now he allowed himself to be cheered by the audience after perhaps the best match of Ajax in years.

At home against Lyon came out where Peter Bosz. The combination of aggressive, attractive and winning football came clearly to the surface, the perfunctory game that Ajax under Frank de Boer often it was a quickly fading memory.
Not only the environment, enter the name of the best Dutch footballer ever, also showed the game will see puffs of what it once was. ‘Ajax are back’ headlined last the British newspaper the Telegraph. And that was not for nothing. Ajax has again a team to be reckoned with, to growing, to keep also. A team full of perspectiefrijke young men that can continue beyond our modest Eredivisie.
Take for example the cool striker Kasper Dolberg, who in the away game against Lyon that oh so important hit is accounted for. Where fellow attackers as Amin Younes and Bertrand Traoré might fail if they are in the vicinity of the enemy goal looming, the young Dane there is a coolness after that, at his age (19 years) is rarely shown.
And then that affable shout for him, as if it all just is what he is doing. No kiss on the ring or dance with the cornervlag; no hearts in the direction of the camera, just a gentle faint smile, the congratulations of the team in receipt and back to the own half. On to the next goal.
“Ajax is a team full of characterful, passionate players become, where under Frank de Boer seemed to teem with the interchangeable bleeksnoetjes.”
Or take This Is, with its 17 years, the benjamin of the bunch. His debut in Orange against Bulgaria, while too early and ended up in a disappointment, but he recovers remarkably quickly from his failed baptism of fire. On the basis of his mentor, Barry Hulshoff, a tough stopper from the time in the early seventies, that Ajax the successes aaneenreeg, develops The Is rapidly in the right direction.
And so it is there almost on each position a success story. The known for his energetic dribbelaar Amin Younes, in Germany not good enough for the Bundesliga, the whimsical, but still stronger, global Chelsea-mercenary Bertrand Traoré, but also the genius of Hakim Ziyech, who always thinks ahead, and every back-pass as a defeat experience.
The indestructible captain Davy Klaassen that his team always there through marches, no matter how difficult the challenge. With next to him, Lasse Schöne, once fairly nondescript at Heerenveen and NEC, but Ajax has become a master-controller which is also the depth want to search.
And what about André Onana, goalkeeper without fear, that after his gaffe at the beginning of march against FC Groningen on no error to catch. The successor of Jasper Cillessen had to compete with Tim Krul as fit again, but it proved to be an unequal fight. Curl didn’t know how fast he elsewhere had to report. Ajax is a team full of characterful, passionate players become, where under Frank de Boer seemed to teem with the interchangeable bleeksnoetjes.
Cruyff and Guardiola
That is the great strength of Peter Bosz has shown. That he has a team full of quirky individuals into a unity has wrought. One that under his leadership, in addition a style to uses in which the public is back on the banks. Because happens this season again in the Arena. A match against Lyon was also in 8-4 end, continually there was activity in both strafschopgebieden. Where it was noticed that Ajax even at an intermediate position of 3-0 went looking for a fourth hit, instead of consolidating, as many coaches prefer to see.
If not Peter Bosz, who himself is indebted calls on illustrious trainers as Johan Cruyff and Pep Guardiola. In a time when we openly question our traditional way of playing, which is often the terms such as ‘not realistic’ and ‘not this time’ fall, let Bosz see that the Dutch School, the gates are still not need to close. “We play football for the supporters”, let the coach already know.
Look to the countries around us, can again be addressed, now Ajax clubs from higher excited leagues like Germany and France has defeated. “Wonderful that he is now in the finals,” said Jan Smith, the just-retired president of Heracles, divided over two periods of five years worked with Bosz.
“Peter is an intelligent guy, where I always have good conversations I conducted. It is also a man that is very bad against his loss. In sport a good feature, although I am always incredibly painful to him, and of his pretending to convince you.”
“‘In this way, you put Dutch football on the map again, not whining about a Premier league with sixteen or eighteen clubs.’”
Former Heracles chairman Jan Smit
Already at Heracles stood Bosz for attractive, offensive football, of course with a different perspective. Smit: “With all of the qualitative restrictions on Heracles to hear, he tried the team yet offensively to play. He has the club put on the map, but also themselves. We took him about The County of which he is relegated, so there was quite a bit of risk in it. But it worked great. Two years later, he went as technical director at Feyenoord, that suited him less. Back with us, he came back to bloom.”
“With its positive view force you the happiness that you saw in the matches against Schalke and Lyon. When he crawled in Ajax through the eye of the needle. But this way you put Dutch football on the map again, not whining about a Premier league with sixteen or eighteen clubs. Leaf proves that the Dutch School is not bankrupt, that we are faithful to keep our own identity, our own style. With all the ups and downs that go with it.”
By reaching the Europa League final is the skepticism that surrounded him around his appointment, started to clear. In particular, his past at Feyenoord, he was heavily charged. When Ajax at the end of August the moment with 4-1 at in Rostov in the return of the last qualifying round of the Champions League it seemed that the false start from him immediately would be breaking up. The football was still stroperiger than under his predecessor, almost all duels were lost and of some depth in the game was not the case.
Bosz trusted in that period in time, men like Anwar El Ghazi, Nemanja Gudelj, Mitchell Dijks and Riechedly Bazoer, players that soon the field would clean up. With any noise, but Leaf had seen. With these pawns, he would the war not win. So, he ventured also to Kenny Tete and Jairo Riedewald, despite their status as neo-internationals, most of the time to the bank to refer to.
Schöne was given the key of the society, the pouch was pulled for Ziyech, Joël Veltman moved to the right wing where he is less evil could, and in the heart of the defence was the Colombian eensmansdestructiebedrijf Davinson Sánchez standing. Also, there was space for new Ajax talent as Donny van de Beek and Justin Kluivert. It turned out all golden handles.
The dull breedtevoetbal of the seasons, was the Dutch equivalent of the famous Barcelonese tiki-taka-football. And about the system of the so-called gegenpressing, which means that within five seconds after losing the ball again recaptured, at first was quite giggly, but it paid for itself eventually. With even the stylist Ziyech is omschoolde to workhorse. As everyone at Ajax felt called upon losing the ball to the extreme to go to the jewel again to conquer.
The vision of Leaf was by everyone embraced, from player to supporter, everybody likes of Ajax. So there should be soon, as well as Manchester United in the final of the Europa League is defeated, some cheered. Also by Peter Bosz.
But a feestnummer it will never be, know, Jan Smit. “Haha, I will never forget how we once with Heracles in the winter break with a coach on the road were to the east of Germany for a training camp. Leaf was sitting in the front of the bus, and had cardboard personally a sort of office manufactured where he has all the players one by one received for an appraisal, so driven was he. With that man, we are champion, I thought. Half a year later, it was all so far. It is a real top trainer.”
