‘The Shooter’ takes stand against ex-New England mafia boss

BOSTON – The former partner of the infamous gangster James “Whitey” Bulger has taken the stand to testify against his friend, a former New England Mafia boss on trial for the killing of a nightclub owner in 1993.

But so much time has passed since the two see each other in that the former Bulger partner Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi apparently do not recognize Francis “Cadillac Frank” Salemme, Jr. sitting in the court. When asked to Salemme, Flemmi stood up, looked in the room and said that he could not see him.

Flemmi is expected to testify that he walked in on the killing of Steven DiSarro. Prosecutors say Salemme son strangled DiSarro while another man, Paul Weadick, held DiSarro feet and Salemme viewed.

Weadick and Salemme deny involvement in the murder. Salemme’s son died in 1995.
