‘The most powerful drug cartel in Colombia would surrender’
The most powerful drugsbende in Colombia, the Golfkartel, is willing to surrender to the authorities. That has the Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos announced Tuesday.
Santos said that his government Sunday, a meeting with the head of the Golfkartel, reports AP. Who would have said that he is ready “to surrender to justice, along with all his men”.
The Colombian minister of Justice and the attorney-general will offer to evaluate and “correct actions”, said Santos in a speech at the presidential palace in the capital, Bogota.
“This would be a submission to the righteousness, not political negotiation,” said the Colombian president. Last Monday was also known that the Colombian government a cease-fire has reached the last extreme left-wing guerrilla army in the country, the National Liberation army (ELN).
Santos signed earlier an agreement on the disarmament of the largest rebel army, the FARC.
According to the Colombian ministry of Defence has the cartel approximately 1,800 members. The organization has suffered greatly under a large anti-drugsoffensief of the Santos government, which the Gulf cartel, more than half of its original members is lost.
The Golfkartel was founded by former members of right-wing paramilitary organizations, which for more than fifty years, fought against left-wing rebel factions. From the eighties of the last century it served the cartel as smokkelarm of the Calikartel, one of the most powerful criminal organizations in history.
