Pennsylvania grand jury says the investigation of the clergy sexual abuse identified more than 1,000 child victims.

The grand jury report released Tuesday says that the number of records in six Roman Catholic dioceses. The grand jury says that it believes that the “real number” of the abused children may be “in the thousands” since a number of records were lost and victims were afraid to come forward. The report says more than 300 priests committed abuse over a period of decades.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro says that the probe was a systematic cover-up by senior church officials in Pennsylvania and in the Vatican.

Pennsylvania officials have released a landmark of the grand jury report identifies more than 300 “predator priests” who abused children in six dioceses.

Also accuses the leaders of the church, of taking steps to cover-up the abuse. The report originated from one of america’s most comprehensive study of clergy sexual abuse.

The report gives the findings of many previous church surveys in the whole country in his description of the widespread sexual abuse by priests and church officials’ concealment.

The grand jury examined abuse allegations in the diocese who minister to more than half of the state’s 3.2 million Catholics.

Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the former bishop of Pittsburgh, who now leads the Washington archdiocese, said ahead of the report’s release that he expected to be criticized.

Cardinal Donald Wuerl, archbishop of Washington, is defending himself ahead of a forthcoming grand jury report investigation into the sexual abuse of children in six of the Pennsylvania Catholic dioceses.

He says the report is critical of some of his actions as Pittsburgh’s bishop.

Wuerl wrote priests late Monday, ahead of Tuesday’s release of the report. He says that he acted diligently to protect children, while the bishop of Pittsburgh for 18 years until 2006.

Court records say that the report identifies more than 300 “predator priests” and that grand jury members accuse the leaders of the church of brush next to the victims to protect the perpetrators and religious institutions.

Wuerl is already dealing with allegations that a predecessor, disgraced ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, allegedly sexually abused boys and adult students. He said last month that the archdiocesan records showed no complaints about McCarrick.

The time is ticking down to decide what information to black out in the coming grand jury report investigation into the sexual abuse of children in six of the Pennsylvania Catholic dioceses.

The state Supreme Court set a Tuesday deadline for the public release of a redacted version of the approximately 900-page report.

Some of the clergy mentioned in the document to say that they are wrongly accused and are fighting to challenge the allegations against them. The high court says that you believe that their claims in September, but in the meantime ordered a report to be released with the identity of these clergy put away.
