The Latest: Police: Father, son dead in murder-suicide

NEW YORK – The Latest on missing 2 year-old and father found dead in Virginia (all times are local):

Police say a 2-year-old Long Island boy and the father suspected of abducting him in the middle of a bitter custody dispute are supposed to be death in Virginia in a clear murder-suicide.

Police tentatively identified the bodies found Wednesday in a Jeep Grand Cherokee in Rockbridge County as Jovani Ligurgo and his father, John Ligurgo. Both had a gunshot wound and the Jeep was on fire.

The car matches the description and license plate number of Ligurgo’s Jeep.

Jovani mother warned the police on the Tuesday after Ligurgo failed to move the boy off at a pre-arranged time.

New York State Police declined to issue an Amber Alert and the police in Suffolk County on Long Island, waited six hours to ask the public to help.

Amber Alerts are only issued when there is evidence that an abducted child in serious danger.

Suffolk County police said they are awaiting confirmation that the bodies found Wednesday in a vehicle in Rockbridge County, Virginia are Jovani Ligurgo and his father, John.

They said the vehicle has the same license plate as Ligurgo the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Jovani mother warned the police on the Tuesday after Ligurgo failed to move the boy off at a pre-arranged time.

Suffolk police requested an Amber Alert, but New York State Police said that they do not have enough information to meet the criteria for one.

Amber Alerts are only issued when there is evidence that an abducted child in serious danger.

The police said that they suspected Ligurgo owned a hunting rifle.
