A police sergeant has pleaded not guilty to murder in the shooting of a 66-year-old mentally ill woman in New York City.

Sgt. Hugh Barry was accused Wednesday in Deborah Danner October in the death. A spokesman of the union, ” said Barry did not plan to kill anyone.

The police respond to a 911 call about an emotionally disturbed person as Barry found Danner in her Bronx apartment.

Authorities say at the time that Danner was a threat to the sergeant with a bat when he shot her.

The commissioner of police and the mayor have condemned the shooting. They say he had a stun gun, but it did not.

Barry has been suspended while the criminal case plays.
