TEXARKANA, Arkansas. – The Latest in an inmate attack on the prison of Arkansas that left a security guard dead and another injured (all times are local):
An inmate accused of killing a guard in an Arkansas prison has apologized for the court.
The Texarkana Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/2h3bQJt ) that Tramell MacKenzie Hunter made the comments Monday during his first appearance before the court on preliminary charges of capital murder and battery. Hunter is accused of killing correction officer Lisa Maudlin and the wounding of another officer in an attack Sunday at the Miller County jail in Texarkana.
The newspaper reports that Hunter has said — in his words: “I felt like she was messing with my life.”
Judge Wren Autrey, says Hunter, will be transferred to a maximum security prison.
The authorities in south Arkansas say a corrections officer has died after she was attacked by an inmate in a prison. Another prison worker was injured.
The attack happened on Sunday afternoon at the Miller County jail in Texarkana, on the state of the border with Texas. The Miller County Sheriff’s Office says correctional officer Lisa Mauldin died in a hospital and another officer, Demaris Allen, was injured and taken to a hospital in Little Rock.
The sheriff’s office did not describe the attacks or say what prompted it, but the authorities say the prison is now secure and on lockdown. Arkansas State Police are investigating.
The prisoner’s name has not been released.
