The Latest: Hurricane Florence light increases in speed

RALEIGH, N. C. – The Latest on Hurricanes Florence, Isaac (all times are local):

Hurricane Florence has a higher speed than the head in the direction of the U.S. east coast.

The National Hurricane Center said Tuesday that Florence is moving toward the west-northwest near 15 miles (24 kmh) and the storm will continue a slight increase of the speed in the next few days.

The Miami-based center says the storm’s center was located about 410 miles (660 kilometers) south of Bermuda, and about 975 miles (1570 kilometers from the east-southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina.

Maximum sustained winds were clocked at 140 km / h (220 km / h) as it moved west-southwest around 13 km / h (20 miles / hour).

Florence is expected to be an extremely dangerous major hurricane by Thursday night.

Hurricane Florence continues to grow in scope and size as it barrels towards the US east coast.

The National Hurricane Center said Monday, the monster storm close to Category 5 strength by the Tuesday. A Category 5 storm has the potential to lead to catastrophic damage.

“The bottom line is that there is a high degree of certainty that Florence is a large and very dangerous hurricane, regardless of the exact intensity,” the hurricane center said. Florence is a Category 4 storm late afternoon of Monday.

At 11 a.m. EDT, the storm’s centre was located about 465 miles (750 kilometers) south-southeast of Bermuda and about 1,085 miles (1745 km from the east-southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina.

Maximum sustained winds were clocked at 140 km / h (220 km / h) as it moved west-southwest around 13 km / h (20 miles / hour).

Some strengthening is expected in the next 36 hours and Florence is expected to be an extremely dangerous major hurricane until Thursday.
