A Chicago man has been arrested after his 5-year-old son, who was shot in the face in a 2016 drive-by shooting, accidentally shot himself in the hand with the man the gun.

Chicago police said late Wednesday the 25-year-old Kevin Collins has been charged with felony gun counts, including possession of a firearm with a serial number that is unreadable. He is also facing felony charges of causing a child in danger.

The police says Kavan Collins shot himself Tuesday night after finding a loaded, uncased gun in a bedroom of a home on the city’s South side.

They say that Kevin Collins is a convicted criminal that the gun is illegal.

Last year, the boy was walking with his mother and others when a bullet fired from a vehicle struck him in the jaw.

Police say the latest shooting happened Tuesday night in a home on the city’s South side. Police say the father of the boy obtained the gun illegally.

The police says Kavan Collins shot himself after finding a gun in a bedroom.

Department spokesman Anthony guglielmi says detectives are questioning the father about the weapon that was not registered and had a serial number that is unreadable. He says the father will probably be charged with the felony counts in connection with the gun and child in danger. The police has not yet released the name of the father.
