The Latest: Damond family praises against officer

MINNEAPOLIS – The Latest against an American police officer who shot and killed an Australian woman who in July (all times are local):

The family of an unarmed Australian woman, were shot dead by a Us police officer responding to her 911 call says to the officer: “it is a step in the direction of justice.”

Officer Mohamed Noor in the Tuesday morning and is being held on murder and manslaughter charges. He shot Justine Ruszczyk (ROOS’-chehk) Damond in the stomach, in July, after she approached his patrol car in the alley behind her house.

Damond’s family said in a written statement that they are pleased that Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman decided to bring charges. They say that they hope that they have a strong case will be presented and Noor will be convicted.

Their statement says justice “demands accountability for those responsible for the reckless killing of the citizens they are sworn to protect.”

An American police officer who shot and killed an Australian woman who in July has been booked on charges of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Officer Mohamed Noor on Tuesday after an arrest warrant was issued for his arrest in the death of Justine Ruszczyk (ROOS’-chehk) Damond. Damond was shot July 15, minutes after she called 911 to report a possible sexual assault in the alley behind her house.

The 40-year-old coach was engaged to be married.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman was scheduled to discuss costs in the case of a 2:30 p.m. press conference.

Noor has not spoken in public about the matter and declined to be interviewed by the researchers.

The prison records show he is being held on $500,000 bail.
