All-American Road Trip: Kentucky Bourbon Trail
Todd Piro will learn the art of making bourbon in Kentucky distilleries.
Our last stop on the “Fox and Friends” All-American Summer Road Trip is the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, which runs from Louisville to Lexington. Each year there are more than a million visitors travel to this idyllic setting located in the heart of horse country, so we decided to check it out.
In Wild Turkey, we met master distiller Jimmy Russell, a legend around these parts. He works in the bourbon business for 64 years — and shows no signs of stopping.

We also learned how Wild Turkey got its name. Managers of the original company, while on a wild turkey hunt, were charged with bringing the bourbon to the annual event. They have holes in a vessel of a special selection, and the hunters liked it so much, that they decided to market it. That is how the unusual and now legendary brand name was born.

In the City Branch, we have learned how important drums are the bourbon-making process. For example, bourbon actually comes in a barrel as a clear liquid, and takes on the distinctive hue of the inside of the oak barrels it is stored in. As it turns out, the barrels themselves are charred before being filled, and in the course of the year, the drink takes the orange color is known for.
We could find no better place to have the All-American Summer Road Trip for 2018. Thanks for coming along for the ride!
