BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. – A man who authorities say fatally shot one person and four others injured when he fired his gun in a hotel and when passing cars on a Tennessee highway has pleaded guilty to murder.
News media report that the 37-year-old Lakeem Keon Scott entered on the request to murder and other charges Thursday morning. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 52 years.
The shooting took place on July 7 along a motorway in Bristol, which borders Virginia. Authorities said Scott started with the shooting at a Days Inn, and then he focused his fire at passing cars.
The authorities have said Scott, who is black, was motivated to act in response to the police violence against African-Americans.
Sullivan County prosecutor Barry Staubus Scott told investigators, Scott said that he was “tired of seeing my people killed.”
