COVENTRY, R. I. – A zoning board public hearing on a proposal to build a gun range in the vicinity of a Rhode Island elementary school has been postponed due to crowds packed into the meeting room above capacity.
The Coventry Zoning Board voted to postpone the hearing on Wednesday night after the fire marshal determined that the construction of the town hall was crowded. The discussion was scheduled for Jan. 10 on a larger site.
Gun store owner John Psilopoulos has proposed the construction of the range of a little more than a mile (1.61 km) away from Washington Oak elementary School.
The school committee opposes the project, citing concerns about public safety and the noise that would be created.
Psilopoulos said the range would follow the best safety and sound tests, sound would be far below the legal limits.
