Justine Latton, told Fox News, “Pygmy possums are very common (the Mount Field), we can expect the spider probably just saw an opportunity and went for it! It was one of the largest huntsman spiders that I have ever seen. And the Tasmanian Pygmy Possums, are the smallest of all pygmy possums, I believe. It was about the size of a large walnut. This event is very unusual, or so I am told. Huntsman spiders are going to be a small lizard or a frog, but the mammals are not on their normal diet. She had to catch the pair and leaves them outside to get the door to open it! But no spiders were harmed in the relocation effort to allow for the possum).”
Graham Milledge, the managing director of the australian Museum’s arachnology collection, he spoke to The Guardian described the scene to play in one of the photos as “extremely rare.” He said: “this is the first time I’ve seen a little possum as prey.” According to him, the huntsman spiders usually eat small birds, frogs, and geckos.
This is not the only spider to pop up in an unexpected place recently.
