A sociologist suggests vegans contribute to “white men” in a scientific article.
Scholars argue the eating of meat contributes to a “toxic masculinity”, but a sociologist has come to a different conclusion: the giving of flesh promotes “white masculinity.”
The North Carolina State University instructor Mari Mycek – a vegan self – published “Meatless meals and masculinity,” a scientific article on the “multidisciplinary concept” of masculinity and the eating of the greens, CampusReform.org reported.
After Mycek conducted 20 in-depth interviews with self-proclaimed vegan and vegetarian men, she concluded that they “keep gendered binaries of emotion/rationality, and the current ideas of the middle-class, white masculinity.”
THE EATING OF MEAT ENCOURAGES TOXIC MASCULINITY, ACADEMIC JOURNAL SAYS
Before the start of her research, Mycek thought vegan men base their decision to give up meat on emotion and received a negative feedback for the switch, but its findings were the opposite.
“[Vegan/vegetarian] men justify their identity is not only reasonable and rational, but not emotional,” Mycek argues, is a “manhood act” or, in other words, she says that they are “redoing gender.”
She argues the meatless men contribute to undetected inequality and fall in line with a masculine identity, because they are “masculine-coded discourses” by making a rational decision to prevent the meat’, based on scientific research, rather than personal opinion or emotions, she argues, would be expected of women.
“The men to effectively engage in a feminized practice (only eat plants), but masculinize, instead of the feminize themselves and their consumption identities,” Mycek wrote, continue with the argument “masculinity receives its prestige, authority and power in the US at the expense of women and femininity.”

Mycek also people who are vegan, paleo, or other alternative diets are predominantly white.
She concludes veganism is a form of ‘cultural capital’ or food choice privilege, where they symbolize the social and cultural prestige on the expose of people in less privileged positions.
“It is clear that there is a certain degree of privilege is necessary to eat a [vegan/vegetarian] diet,” Mycek said.
Positive media attention in the direction of vegetarians, such as President Bill Clinton and Tobey Maguire, as “hot” and “sexy” for the show of meat has contributed to the vegan masculinity according to her paper.

Mycek admits that her choice to identify as a woman and as a vegan may have affected in his / her data collection interviews with the men for the project.
She argues more research should be done, with less economically privileged people from a variety of racial and ethnic groups.
