The festivalplaten of Konna: “I send the people to go home with a classic’

Deejays this summer to line up at the festivals tell us which plates before, during, and after their set cannot be missed. This week: house-dj Konna. ‘An African picture is always good for the women.”

The dj: Mathijs Maes took during his student days already off to a flying start with a private evening in the Antwerp club Amps. The Observer lingered in the Koekenstad and is now like to be seen in Bar, Bright, Kompass and on Studio Brussels, where his passion for house and the genres around it in the past radioseizoen weekly shared.

Set: Friday, June 29, Paradise City, 18.00-20.00 hours (along with Hush Hefner), though he is this summer to spot on Borgerwood, Booty Rave and Pukkelpop.

Which album turned you on to running?

MATHIJS MAES: The English house – and dubstepproducer Joy Orbison is one of the dj’s that is in me the fire to the wick has been put, because he is with songs like Hyph Mngo for me as the first crossing made of dubstep and other very on the bass-oriented genres to the rest of the dance music. MAES: I try for my set is always as many other artists and bands to check out. MAES: I don’t have a fixed opener, but start with a clean slate, without beats. Something like Get On Up (Rick Wilhite, the houselegende from Detroit, Theo Parrish’ Late Dub. And what if it fails? With which album drag you to your audience through a difficult time?

MAES: A Love Bizarre by Prince and Sheila E. The most people recognize the number, but sometimes, young people may not have a title on paste. That combination makes it easy for the people to get loose. I myself am a very big Princefan. It remains in my eyes the best musician that ever lived. That he will also always continue, when you see how broad his musical palette went from bombastic Purple Rain to a funknummer like this.

Is there in your set of room for a sing?

MAES: That depends, if some of the pictures that I rotate for the same sense of belonging as a sing-along. Promised Land by Joe Smooth, for example, is still one of the most important houseplaten ever made and a very positive track.

With what record let you the temperature on the dance floor rise?

MAES: Real grinding happens quickly during my sets, but I like to play a bit of African music and that often does it well with the women. A title? No Woman No y of the South African Condry Ziqubu. A truth like a cow, because if the ladies do not dance, do the men not have to.

What guilty pleasure would you secretly like to see a set of stitches, even though you know that it can’t?

MAES: Eisbaer by Grauzone. Ever comes that hear, but the right moment has not yet arrived. As an album, I play only during a very special set, during a vacation or so. I have been going a few years on ski holidays of Boardfever and on We Play House @ Snow, the sneeuwtrip of We Play Snow, the based house label from Red D. On holiday, it can all be a bit looser and the more false classic ever to be played.

With what plates you sets off?

MAES: I’m a very big believer of a good classic at the end of the evening. Two weeks ago I closed in the Kompass in Ghent with Lena by 2 Belgen. After two hours full of mostly obscure tracks, I find it just fun to the people with his bomb of a song to send. Da’s instant happiness for the public.

You also have a soundtrack to cool off after your set?

MAES: I usually have a long drive ahead and drive out there often have a whole album by. Moon Safari by Air is great, especially the song Kelly Watch The Stars. The perfect number to under the starry sky to house to cruising.

And how do you come to the next morning?

MAES: I work at N. E. W. S. Records, the label that, inter alia, the Texan psychsensatie Khruangbin distributes. Their last album, Con Todo El Mundo, I find really great. The ideal zondagnamiddagmuziek, especially when the sun is on the effective conductivity.
