The family recipe: ‘Everybody likes the Serbian potatoes of my mother’

Some recipes are already járen old and tastes perhaps precisely because of the nostalgia as well. NU.nl asks ordinary people to special recipes from their family. This week tells Astrid van de Ven (48) about the Serbian potatoes from her mother.

Van de Ven was eight years old when she potatoes for the first time, was presented.

Her mother had no desire to do shopping, so flanste they put something together from what they had lying around. That were potatoes, speklappen, onions, peas and carrots.

“We wondered what it would be,” says Van de Ven. “My mother said that the ‘very special’ was: Serbian potatoes.”

Never in Serbia have been

When Van de Ven became older, she asked her mother how the court actually to his name. A Serbian recipe is not. The family was never even in the country. “They invented on the spot.”

The Serbian potatoes are also now, some forty years later, still governed by Van de Ven on the table. For the security she has always a bag of frozen potato cubes in the freezer. She makes the recipe especially often if there is a large group to eat. “That’s because it’s easy to make for a large group, but also because it is always a success. Everybody likes it.”

Dish is a symbol for fun

Used to eat them, the court usually with a large group. The family of her father advanced on Sunday. Then arose the Ven with her mother in the kitchen to help with the cubes of the potatoes.

“My mother thought it was so laborious for such a large group is that they not always wanted to make it. Therefore, helped everyone with the cut. Through these memories is the court for me a symbol for fun, family meals and homemaking.”

Ingredients (for five people)

  • 600 grams speklappen
  • 5 onions
  • 250 grams diepvrieserwtjes and carrots
  • 600 grams of potato cubes
  • Pepper and salt
  • Nutmeg and paprika

Method of preparation

  • Cut the speklappen in cubes.
  • Season the meat with salt, pepper, nutmeg and paprika
  • Fry the speklappen.
  • Cut meanwhile the onions coarsely and fry them with the speklappen until they are sweet and brown.
  • Add the peas and carrots and let them warm.
  • Fry, meanwhile, the potato cubes (can also stir fried).
  • Mix everything together and serve.
