The FAA will conduct evacuation trials, with 720 men, 12 days, in November, the Deputy Administrator Elwell said, in the US, with a hearing in the House on Thursday.

“The americans are increasing in size and the seat size is important, but it needs to be looked at in the context of safety and security,” Elwell said. “We’re going to get you an answer as to the seat pitch.”

Seat pitch – the distance from one seat to the next – in the low-cost U.S. carriers such as Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines are among the smallest at 28 inches in economy. BRITISH airline Ryanair currently has a 30-inch, as EasyJet is 29 inches.

“Later this year, we are going to establish the required seat pitch, width, length, and based on safety and security,” Elwell added.

American Airlines and United Airlines will be configuring a lot of its latest equipment as at 30 inches of seat pitch, while it will add premium economy seats with 34 inches.
