HOUSTON – A jury convicted the former Houston medical resident to life in prison for the death of his ex-girlfriend and his new girlfriend of the ex-spouse.
The Harris County jury in Houston deliberated slightly more than an hour Monday before they returned with the maximum penalty for the 40-year-old Leon Philip Jacob. That is, after finding him guilty Friday of capital murder solicitation.
His girlfriend, the 48-year-old Houston vet Valerie Busick McDaniel, had also been charged with capital murder invitation. However, she jumped to her death from her seventh-floor apartment complex a year ago during the free bond.
Defense attorneys had urged jurors to sentence Jacob to a period of probation. Jurors heard evidence about how Jacob and McDaniel hired an undercover police agent posing as a hit man to kill their ex-partners. Neither target is harmed.
