The Congressional Hispanic Caucus blasts border funding bill as a ‘betrayal’ of American values

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi allegedly had a tense meeting with Democrats who think that the emergency-border-funding bill is not enough to the humanitarian crisis.

The members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus blasted Thursday, the transition from one-party $ 4.5 billion border funding bill, calling it a “betrayal of our American values.”

A coalition of house Democrats and Republicans came together to approve the legislation, which now goes to President Trump’s Desk for his signature.

“This law, contrary to the Hispanic Caucus and nearly 100 Democratic members of the house — will not stop the Trump administration chaos and cruelty,” a caucus statement said. “It will not stop the mistreatment and detention of children. It will not stop the rampant human rights abuses in government detention. It will not stop, the Trump administration, from families tearing apart, and turn to the asylum seekers. Migrants will continue to die.”

“If the Congressional Hispanic Caucus members suffer at the border, we see our children and our grandchildren”, the continued CHC. “What happened today is unacceptable, and we will not forget this betrayal. Moving forward, we will continue to fight for immigrants to be treated with dignity and respect, working to the end of Trump’s deportation agenda, and fix our broken immigration system.”

Pelosi cited the need for funding to help children caught at the U.S.-Mexican border for the movement of the bill to the front.

“To get resources to the children the fastest, we passed reluctantly by the Senate,” she wrote in a letter to colleagues. “How do we, the Senate passed, that we will, with a battle cry, as we go forward, in order to protect children in a way that honors really their dignity and value.”
